Søren Lee | HOPE | July 26, 2024

Release: July 26, 2024

Since the release of his 1990 debut album featuring legendary bassist Ray Brown (Oscar Peterson, Ella Fitzgerald), guitarist and composer Søren Lee has cemented himself as a captivating presence in the international jazz world.

A dedication to his late wife, his poignant, cathartic new album ‘Hope’ is set to release on the 28th of June.

A collection of nine of his favorite songs and compositions, the record sees Lee gather some of the finest musicians from Denmark, the USA and Cuba in a celebration of his partner’s life.

“My beloved beautiful wife and true love Eva Awa Faye Lee was very sick at this time of the recording and everything I play here I played for her. My wife was my biggest support and the one that supported and inspired me to get back into recording my own music after a break for 13 years from 2003 to 2016. I therefore dedicate this entire album and music to her and her great legacy.”

Featuring Lee’s take on Gershwin’s rhythm changes, the bossa nova feel of ‘Like Tears in the Rain’, the scorching uptempo swing of ‘A Few More Steps’, and the 5/4 funk groove of ‘Living Now’, the record is firmly rooted in the jazz tradition while offering modern perspectives on song forms any jazz fan will be familiar with. From virtuosic improvisations over dense contemporary harmony, to lyrical melodies in a comforting songwriter/Americana context, Lee’s effortless guitar playing comes across as an extension of his voice as it carries his band through the broad range of styles under his fingers.

With the energy, excitement and interactivity of a live recording at the album’s core, the ensemble’s sound is elevated by layers of swelling electric guitar chords and delicately plucked acoustic guitar parts
