Danny Widdicombe & Trichotomy | Iridescence | 25 July, 2025

Genre-defying Australian trio Trichotomy reunites with acclaimed songwriter Danny Widdicombe for a new collaboration that fuses jazz interplay with the heartfelt storytelling of roots, folk, and soul music. Building on the success of their award-winning collaboration Between the Lines (2020), IRIDESCENCE—out July 25th on Earshift Music — sees the group deepening their shared language in a sound that’s both timeless and sonically adventurous.
The 10 original songs draw on influences ranging from raw storytelling to post-rock textures and laid-back 60s soul grooves, resulting in a sound that is distinctly their own.
Widdicombe, known for his work with ARIA-nominated band The Wilson Pickers and a series of acclaimed solo albums, brings his soulful songwriting into dialogue with Trichotomy. Their bold and innovative take on the modern piano trio format over the last 15 years has seen them hailed as one of Australia’s most inventive contemporary music ensembles.
Where Between the Lines introduced their creative chemistry to Australian audiences—earning them the 2021 QLD Music Award for Jazz Work of the Year—IRIDESCENCE takes things further. The album channels the rhythmic spirit of The Meters, the warmth of Leon Bridges and Ray LaMontagne, and the modern soul aesthetic of Khruangbin, while staying rooted in Trichotomy’s signature interplay and lyrical approach to jazz.
“We didn’t really plan out a lot of the music,” says Widdicombe. “We had sketches of songs and just went into the studio. The songs took their shape throughout the session.”
That sense of spontaneity defines the album’s creative process. Recorded over four days at the iconic MONA art museum in Tasmania, the group leaned into the immediacy of live performance—allowing their ideas to unfold organically in the moment with four musicians in the same room, with minimal overdubs and an emphasis on instinctive, in-the-moment collaboration.
The result is a record rich in atmosphere and groove, where Widdicombe’s soulful vocals and lyrical storytelling meet Trichotomy’s exploratory instincts. There’s a looseness in the rhythm section, a warmth in the harmonies, and space for improvisation throughout—creating a sound that’s both nostalgic and refreshingly modern.
“There’s scope in the music for us to be really creative,” says pianist Sean Foran. “It challenges us to respond to Danny’s lyrics and songwriting craft. These are beautiful songs that really stay with you.”
Together, they’ve created a record that is as emotionally resonant as it is musically rich — a shimmering new chapter in Australia’s genre-blurring jazz scene.
