Kosmos Trio | …and the Sun | August 21, 2026
Danish pianist and composer Frede Holger Thorsen returns with a new chapter for Kosmos Trio on …and the Sun, an album shaped by patience, presence, and a deep belief in the power of live musical interaction. Recorded entirely in a single room with bassist Martin Brunbjerg and drummer Jesper Lørup, the album captures a piano-led trio sound rooted in Nordic jazz, balancing spacious melodies, rich harmony, delicate grooves, and an ever-present interplay between tension and comfort.
…and the Sun is set for release on August 21st, 2026 via April Records.
While Kosmos Trio first emerged with the acclaimed Brev Til En Ven (2022), this new recording introduces a fresh constellation around Thorsen. The pianist first met Brunbjerg after hearing him perform with vocalist Nana Rashid and immediately felt a musical connection. Lørup joined through a recommendation from a friend, and together the three musicians quickly developed the trust and openness that define the album.
That spirit extends to the recording process itself. Determined to preserve the music’s natural flow, the trio recorded the entire album live in one room. The approach demanded complete focus and presence, resulting in performances that feel immediate, conversational, and unforced. Throughout the album, colorful harmonic landscapes unfold alongside subtle rhythmic complexities, with odd time signatures woven naturally into the trio’s musical language.
The music brings together compositions written across nearly a decade, including Clairvoyance, originally composed in 2017 and inspired by a vision experienced by Thorsen’s father. Several tracks draw inspiration from specific moments and places. The single Gregorian Rhapsody was inspired by recordings of Gregorian chant that Thorsen discovered during a visit to the Danish town of Løgumkloster, while Impro grew from a completely spontaneous improvisation suggested by Brunbjerg during a session. Hearing it back afterwards, the trio immediately knew it belonged on the record.
The title track, …and the Sun, reflects the warmth and simplicity at the heart of the project. Built from just two chords, it embodies the sense of gratitude and positivity that runs throughout the album. That feeling is echoed in pieces such as Beautiful 9, inspired by the planets and the sun, and For a Minute, Lørup’s celebration of life’s small but meaningful moments.
Ultimately, …and the Sun is an album rooted in light, love, and appreciation for life. Its darker, contemplative moments are balanced by warmth and optimism, creating music that feels both intimate and expansive. Bringing together compositions written over many years, a newly formed trio, and a recording process built on trust and immediacy, it captures a group fully present in the moment and committed to creating something honest together.
