Mathias Landæus / Nina De Heney / Kresten Osgood | Dissolving Patterns | March 7, 2025
Veterans of the Scandinavian jazz and improvisation scene – pianist Mathias Landæus, bassist Nina de Heney, and drummer Kresten Osgood – first performed together in 2013 as part of Landæus’ acclaimed Underground concert series in Lund, Sweden.
Cultivating a rare musical chemistry defined by deep communication, fearless exploration and a vivid sense of atmosphere, their highly anticipated debut recording ‘Dissolving Patterns’ is set to release on March 7th, 2025 on SFӒR.
On playing with the trio, bassist Nina De Heney says, “I am often out in the forest where I prefer walking on the smaller paths, my thoughts wandering whilst looking and listening to the sounds of nature. Playing with Mathias and Kresten gives me the same feeling of freedom, peace and happiness, it’s like walking on new winding paths every time we meet, in a very beautiful forest full of magical fruit and everything tastes like the first time.”
Recorded in a single studio session before a performance in Gothenburg in November 2023, the album presents the music exactly as it unfolded—piece by piece, in the order it was recorded. This approach allows the trio’s organic storytelling and unfiltered creativity to shine through, creating a sonic journey that is as cohesive as it is unpredictable.
For years, Landæus had dreamed of capturing the unique identity that resurfaces every time the trio comes together. “I’ve been fascinated by the very distinct sound that emanates from this trio,” he reflects. “I’ve wanted to record us for years, and this session finally made it happen”.
Over the past decade, the trio has performed sporadically but with intentionality, often incorporating guest artists like Herb Robertson, Signe Emmeluth, and Per ‘Texas’ Johansson in extended formats. This deliberate pacing has allowed their sound to evolve naturally, culminating in a recording that reflects both the clarity and the depth of their musical interplay.
According to Osgood, improvisation takes priority over written material in the trio’s creative process. “One of the ideas that is most important to me is that improvisation has the potential to be the place where the most interesting music can be created. It is far superior to composition—or at least has the potential to be,” he explains.
With this album, the trio invites listeners into their ever-evolving world of improvisation—a space where boldness and imagination reign, and every moment brims with possibility. The result is a record that feels timeless, uniting the spontaneity of live performance with the intimate focus of the studio.
