Jacob Wick | I’ll make you coffee while you still sleep | September 18, 2026

American-born, Mexico City-based trumpeter, composer and improviser Jacob Wick explores the quiet moments that define queer relationships on I’ll Make You Coffee While You Still Sleep, a new album from his longstanding quartet. Blending original compositions with imaginative reworkings of standards, the record combines lyrical improvisation, expressive ensemble playing and a distinctly nonlinear approach to musical storytelling.

I’ll Make You Coffee While You Still Sleep is set for release on September 18th, 2026.

Rather than telling a single story, the album unfolds through a series of intimate moments: making breakfast for a partner, driving through the night after visiting a lover, walking hand in hand through Mexico City, and discovering what it means to remain open to love. Written while moving in and out of a relationship that profoundly shaped the music, the album embraces what Wick describes as “queer time” – a sentimental, nonlinear approach to composition and improvisation where memory, longing and the present exist side by side.

Now based in Mexico City, where he has lived since 2014, Wick performs regularly with a quartet that has developed these compositions through ongoing collaboration. Balancing carefully crafted writing with open improvisation, the ensemble moves fluidly between lyrical melodies, shifting rhythmic frameworks and collective interplay, allowing each performance to evolve naturally while remaining rooted in the emotional worlds behind the music.

Although the album is rooted in jazz, its musical language reaches beyond any single tradition. Having come to singing relatively late, Wick uses both voice and trumpet to tell these stories, bringing an added intimacy to music shaped by memory, vulnerability and conversation. Jazz sits alongside elements of American song and experimental composition, reflecting Wick’s background as both a performer and sound artist.

A graduate of SUNY Purchase and California College of the Arts, his work has been presented at institutions including Issue Project Room, the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago and the Poesía en Voz Alta Festival in Mexico City, while his trumpet can be heard on recordings by artists including Claire Rousay, Mabe Fratti, Helado Negro and Federico Sánchez.

At its heart, I’ll Make You Coffee While You Still Sleep is an album about choosing openness despite uncertainty. Through intimate compositions, collective improvisation and emotionally direct ensemble playing, Jacob Wick documents the small, everyday moments that define love, creating music that finds beauty not in certainty, but in connection.
