Etienne Manchon Trio | Weird Life | January 24, 2025

Since the release of his 2017 debut ‘Originals’, award-winning French pianist and composer Etienne Manchon has proved himself to be boundary pushing young voice in contemporary jazz. Teaming up two of the finest instrumentalists on the Paris scene, Clement Daldosso and Théo Moutou, their third studio album ‘Weird Life’ is set to release on January 24th.

Held together by musical bonds that have developed over a decade, Manchon and Moutou have been playing together in a variety of projects from classical to metal since their University days in Toulouse. Forming a trio with Daldosso in 2016 for a one-off project with the Centre de Montagne de Germ, the natural chemistry that emerged motivated the companions to make it a long lasting endeavor.

The trio has gone on to tour extensively around France, performing at many of the country’s leading venues and festivals including Occijazz, Opus Pocus, and perhaps most notably supporting Erik Truffaz at Jazz Sur Son 31 in front of 1500 engaged audience members.

With two EP’s and two albums under their belts since 2018, ‘Weird Life’ serves as the band’s ode to all the oddities of a musician’s life on the road; deeply exhilarating, rewarding, and full of unexpected sources of joy and adventure. Delving deeper into the progressive jazz sound they’ve come to be known for, their music takes as much inspiration from the quintessential jazz sounds of Bill Evans and Émile Parisien as it does the alternative folk of Alice Phoebe Lou and the dreamy electronics of François de Roubaix.

Communicating Manchon’s eclectic compositional ideas across a wide spectrum of keyboard instrument timbres, each piece is framed by its own soundworld made up of sparkling grand piano, searing lead synths, acoustic pianos drenched in reverse delay, Fender Rhodes, and lush pads.

Drawing from the energy of drum’n’bass, the enchanting harmony of European folk-jazz, the heaviness of prog-rock, and the stark acoustic beauty of Scandinavian jazz to name but a few colors of the trio’s ever-evolving stylistic palette, Weird Life is united and grounded by the live, interactive sound of three instrumentalists engaged in musical conversations with an unfettered dedication to their individuality and collective voice.
