Chroma | Chroma | November 8, 2024

From their first meeting, Sebastian Voltz and Gilles Grethen felt a strong musical attraction. Their approaches to the piano and guitar seemed to complement each other, effortlessly blending their rich timbres. After several encounters on the Saarland jazz scene, the pair decided to act on the kinship they felt in their artistry and founded the Chroma project.

Their eponymous debut ‘Chroma’ is set to release on November 8th.

Featuring ten original compositions as well as an improvised piece, the record juxtaposes intimate passages of delicate subtlety with moments of thick texture and intensity. Song-like in structure and tone, the pair draws similarities between their compositional styles and Mendelssohn’s ‘Lieder Ohne Worte’ (Songs Without Words), and to the romantic tradition of conveying stories and emotions through melodic instrumental music.

Putting spontaneity in the foreground, the duo’s lively, free, melodic improvisations showcase the virtuosic abilities of both musicians, as well as shedding a light on their Classical training and chamber music influences.

Piano and guitar make for a notoriously challenging duo; in the pair’s interplay they paint colorfully, weaving their rhythms into an intricate tapestry, skillfully trading roles, passing melodies back and forth, and turning the limitation that both instruments have similar capabilities into opportunity.

Before Gilles Grethen found his way to the guitar, he played violin and clarinet. From his strong interest in classical symphonic music with its enormous richness of colors, he draws the ability to make his guitar playing orchestral and multidimensional.

Sebastian Voltz is first classically trained on the piano. He then found his way to improvised music after his studies. As a lover of modern art, Sebastian Voltz does not want to exclude and delimit, but to connect; in his musical language the styles complement each other.
