Ivo Neame | Zettalogue | October 25, 2024

Recognised by audiences and critics alike as one of the finest pianists on the Contemporary European jazz scene, multi award-winning pianist/composer Ivo Neame is known for his impressive contributions to the genre with Kairos Quartet, Phronesis, and Marius Neset to name but a few. His tenth album under his own name ‘Zettalogue’ is set to release on Ubuntu Music on October 25th.

Settling into Livingstone Studios at the end of 2022 following a successful 12-date UK tour, the record presents new original compositions alongside fresh interpretations of older pieces, in a documentation of a three year process writing, rehearsing, performing and recording with the Ivo Neame Quartet.

With a reputation for in depth explorations of complex rhythms and meters from around the world, the record sees Neame draw from Karnatic music (South Indian Classical music), Hip-Hop, West African Music, and his own curiosity to craft intricate and energetic frameworks for his writing.

Listeners can expect mind-bending palindromic claves, a meditative ballad rich in sonority and emotion and an imaginative reworking of a 12th Century Carol the pianist used to sing in choirs in his youth. There are also reflections of Neame’s work with large ensembles including the Cologne Contemporary Jazz Orchestra, the Frankfurt Radio Jazz Orchestra and the New Rotterdam Jazz Orchestra; ‘Zettalogue’ compiles Neame’s multifaceted musical voice into a cohesive recorded statement.

Accompanying Neame on Zettalogue are three of the finest jazz musicians in the UK. Tom Farmer provides unfailing support on double bass, simultaneously anchoring the complex writing whilst making a distinctive mark on the music. James Maddren plays with his renowned effortless brilliance, shaping the music and gently pushing the members of the quartet into new improvisational territory. George Crowley combines a burnished tone on the saxophone with a visceral and intense approach to the music – he contributes distinctive and engaging solos and helps to reinforce the melodic material.
