Filippo Dall’Asta | The Hot Club of Tenerife | October 11, 2024
Since his 2018 debut ‘Mediterasian’ – praised by LA Music Critic Awards as “one of the best instrumental albums of the year” – Italian guitarist Filippo Dall’Asta has come to be known for his modern spin on Gypsy Jazz, fusing it with musical cultures from around the world, contemporary jazz, and popular music.
Continuing his quest to make a personal imprint on the 100 year old genre, his upcoming release is a celebration of happenstance, adventure and musical curiosity.
‘The Hot Club of Tenerife’ is set to release on October 11th.
First picking up the guitar at the age of five, Dall’Asta went on to study his instrument in his native country as well as Germany, France, Holland and India. His career has seen him tour and record with dozens of artists including Stochelo Rosenberg, Lollo Meier, John Wheatcroft, Tara Minton (Björk), Mehboob Nadeem, and many more across Germany, India, Italy, France, Spain, England, Malta and Russia, with notable appearances at The Royal Albert Hall, the House of Parliament, the Tower of London, Union Chapel, and many festivals in France and Italy.
Making a spontaneous decision to relocate to Tenerife in 2022, the island prompted Dall’Asta to undertake an experiment of relying on his body’s instincts when making decisions: if his body signaled positivity, the guitarist committed to saying “yes” regardless of any conflicting thoughts from his mind. What resulted was a chance meeting with a group of remarkable Tenerife musicians and Dall’Asta’s next body of work; a testament to the power of trusting one’s instincts over rational thought, and embracing life’s adventures without knowing their outcomes.
A nod to Django Reinhardt’s seminal band ‘Quintette du Hot Club de France’, Dall’Asta’s new record is grounded in the energetic Gypsy Jazz sound of the 30’s with a number of modern twists and surprises. Featuring four original compositions alongside reinterpretations of classic jazz standards, joyous melodies from the clarinet and Dall’Asta’s effortless guitar playing take centre stage.
With references to ‘Twinkle Twinkle’ and Nirvana’s ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’, the rich sound of a string quartet and a reworking of Bobby Vinton’s ‘Mr. Lonely’, The Hot Club of Tenerife exhibits an unabashed delight in presenting a contemporary perspective on a style of music steeped in history and tradition.
