Caktus x OJKOS | Øyeblikk | May 29, 2026
Danish saxophonist and composer Maria Dybbroe spent the first two albums with her quintet Caktus refining a chamber music sound that sits well outside the jazz mainstream. The third, Øyeblikk (May 29th, Sonic Transmission Records) expands that sound into a fifteen-piece collaboration with Norwegian ensemble OJKOS.
The result is a richly layered sound world where intimate textures meet expanded dynamics, allowing both newly written material and reworked pieces from the band’s repertoire to take on new depth and complexity.
Rather than adhering to traditional big band conventions, the music explores a more fluid and contemporary approach. The album moves between fragile, tactile moments and larger, more expansive passages, with a strong emphasis on timbre, space, and interplay. Across its hour-long duration, Øyeblikk unfolds as a series of shifting musical environments, where smaller constellations within the ensemble emerge and dissolve, guiding the listener through contrasting moods and atmospheres.
The compositions are rooted in personal experiences from Dybbroe’s life between Denmark and Norway, particularly her time spent in and around Oslo. The titles reflect specific places, events, and emotional states – from the reflective ambiguity of New Year’s Eve (Det nye år) to imagined narratives inspired by passing through locations such as Trollhättan. Elsewhere, more intimate themes surface, including memories of childhood and imagined spaces of belonging.
Throughout, the idea of the “moment” remains central. The title Øyeblikk (meaning “moment”) points both to the fleeting nature of lived experience and to the immediacy of music itself. While live performance captures something unique and unrepeatable, the recorded format allows these moments to be revisited, reshaped, and experienced anew.
Formed in Aarhus in 2017, Caktus has established itself as one of the most distinctive young ensembles on the Scandinavian jazz scene. With a unique instrumentation blending strings, winds, and rhythm section, the group creates music that moves organically between composed and improvised elements. Their previous releases, Under Solen and Flimrende, received widespread critical acclaim, including nominations at the Danish Music Awards Jazz and the Steppeulven Prize.
With Øyeblikk, the group extends this vision into a larger format without losing its core identity — balancing structure and freedom, intimacy and scale.
