A musician’s debut album is often among the most personally significant milestones in their careers, and Icelandic pianist Benjamín Gísli is no exception.
The realisation of a longstanding dream of releasing an acoustic piano trio album, his introspective and modern tribute to the Nordic Jazz tradition titled ‘Line Of Thought’ is set to release on August 18th as a collaboration between Fjordgate Records (NOR) and Reykjavík Records Shop (ISL).
An active member of Norway’s Jazz scene, Gísli has performed extensively across Nordic jazz festivals and clubs. He has recently released two albums with Bliss Quintet and Bento Box Trio which received international acclaim in publications including Jazzwise , Jazznytt and Ballade.
Influenced by the melodic playing of Bill Evans, the melancholy of Esbjörn Svensson Trio and the freedom of Carla Bley, ‘Line of Thought’ is intimate, daring and spacious.
Recorded at Sigur Rós‘s former studio Sundlaugin in Iceland, the trio seeks inspiration from and reflects on the minimalism and contemporary classical sound of the legendary Icelandic post-rock group. Beautiful and evocative melodies added to rich harmonies and drifting complex rhythms make up the trio’s cinematic Nordic sound.
The album features six original compositions by Benjamín Gísli, as well as their interpretation of Carla Bley’s ‘Ida Lupino’. Reflective of the album’s title, through their music the trio strives to invite their listener in to share in a diverse palette of feelings, thoughts and moods.
