Wes Smith | We, the Funky – Volume 1 | January 15, 2026
Los Angeles-based saxophonist, composer, and producer Wes Smith has spent his career at the crossroads of soul, jazz, and pop, performing live with icons including Stevie Wonder, Booker T. Jones, Poncho Sanchez and Justin Timberlake. He has recorded for names like Pharrell Williams and Robin Thicke, and appeared in the Oscar-winning film Whiplash.
Now, with We, the Funky (Vol. 1), Smith steps forward as a bandleader, bringing together an all-star lineup to celebrate the people, places, and stories that have shaped his journey.
At once joyful, personal, and deeply rooted in groove, the album blends Smith’s jazz sensibilities with the pulse of Los Angeles funk and soul. It’s a love letter to the musical community that has defined his career; a “Dream Band” session featuring players like drummer Donald Barrett (Lady Gaga), trumpeter Maurice “Mobetta” Brown (Silk Sonic), and keyboardist Sam Barsh (Kendrick Lamar, Anderson .Paak). Together, they bring Smith’s melodic writing and improvisational fire into a sound world that’s both steeped in jazz tradition and unmistakably modern.
“My time in Los Angeles has been good to me,” says Smith. “This record is about the sunshine and joy of that experience — and about the relationships that have made my musical journey so special.”
Across its tracks, We, the Funky moves from moments of deep reflection to unrestrained groove. “Baby Steps” captures the uncertainty and joy of new fatherhood, while “Sunrises” channels perseverance and faith through its soaring melodic arcs. The title track, meanwhile, is a carefree celebration, a nod to the rhythm section that anchors Smith’s sound and to the enduring spirit of collective creativity.
While its rhythmic energy and soulful flair are front and center, Smith sees We, the Funky as firmly rooted in the jazz tradition; an album of strong melodies, harmonic depth, and inspired improvisation. Each tune showcases a different ensemble and mood, united by a sense of optimism and authenticity that reflects his life in and beyond the studio.
Having performed everywhere from the Hollywood Bowl to the White House, Smith brings his trademark versatility and warmth to his first volume of original music, through a record that’s as much a statement of gratitude as it is of groove.
“I’ve travelled a musical career that’s unique, surprising, modern, and entirely my own,” he says. “I hope this album feels that way too.”
