Led by Israeli bassist Ehud Ettun, “Deep In The Mountains” is an album born out of a 40-day artistic residency in the mountains of PeyongChang in South Korea. Organised as part of the 2018 Winter Olympics, the project brought Ehud together with musicians, artists and dancers from all over the world.

Just like the residency, the record mixes a diverse range of inspiration; from traditional Korean song and Argentinian folk music, to Leonard Bernstein and modern Israeli jazz.

But joined by fellow Israelis Daniel Schwarzwald (piano) and Nathan Blankett (drums), these 11 pieces are brought together into a flowing and coherent album, showing why these musicians – both independently and as a trio – have been gaining recognition across Europe and North America.

Alongside the world music pieces and Great American Songbook classics, four Ehud Ettun originals showcase influences from modern composers like Carla Bley, Steve Lacy, Hermeto Pascoal – and showcase why the Boston Globe noted that he “can conjure the deep soulfulness of Charlie Haden.”

With touring credits including George Garzone, Fred Hersch, Danilo Perez, Donny McCaslin and Anat Cohen, “Deep In The Mountains” should be a step forward for this trio in building an international reputation in its own right.
